kitchen feature, autumn 2008

Via his PR agents I was put in touch with ex-Southampton FC player Francis Benali, who's a property developer these days. I gained a commission from IPC's Beautiful Kitchens glossy, to feature the lovely stylish kitchen Francis & Karen installed in their impressive new-build house between Romsey and Southampton.

Build It magazine September 2008

One of my most regular editorial clients, the latest issue has two features they commissioned from me: an intriguing, beautifully done rebuild of a 1960s box in Twickenham, and a lovely individual home on the Isle of Wight designed by Kingston architect John Onken - this last made the cover too.

Costa del Sol home feature

In June 2007 I covered a striking modern home for Build It magazine, a house built for himself by American architect Michael Earle and his partner Trisha Miller. He lived locally as a child, loves the area and its culture, and employed a fascinating mix of traditional materials such as mud brick together with sophisticated design and an uncompromisingly radical interior. This shot shows the entrance to the "street" separating living from sleeping areas, based on a traditional Andalusian pueblo. My feature appeared in the April 2008 issue.

East Dulwich feature home

Published in SelfBuild & Design magazine in 2007, this is another home built for himself by an architect, in this case Mathew Borowiecki. Demolishing a small bungalow on this elevated plot with sweeping views across South London and all the way to the City, Mathew erected a beautiful customised kit-house - which came from Lithuania in five truckloads! Terrific project, gorgeously spacious, bright, comfortable modern home.

The Guardian Magazine: Jimmy Boyle, riad interior photo DPS

I was dealing with yet another PR company about the possibility of featuring their clients' homes abroad when someone asked if I might be interested in covering Jimmy Boyle's place in Morocco. Things worked out, I spent a long weekend in Marrakech, got on very well with Jimmy, his partner Kate, the ever-helpful Fouad (PA), and the result looked nice in The Guardian Weekend's 'Space' section. Not every day one gets to shoot the home of a guy who did 15 years in Barlinnie on a murder rap, then went on to become an acclaimed sculptor. Nice meeting you, Jimmy.

Sunday Times feature: Old Wyldes, garden & house exterior

When I got a lead to the oldest recorded house in Hampstead (thanks Yasmin!) I realised it might well appeal to one of the national broadsheets: competition for space is such that it takes something really special to grab editors' attention. And this house is special, not just very old with medieval farmhouse origins, but occupied for a while by Charles Dickens, who wrote at least some of Oliver Twist there.

So it was snapped up quickly by The Sunday Times "Home" supplement, with very little time elapsing between my shooting & interviewing, and final publication. Such features can help to encourage sales interest when a place is on the market as this was for £2.75 million.

BBC Homes & Antiques magazine feature: photography at Dartington Glass

As distinct from complete features, sometimes a title will commission me directly for photography. In this case I spent a day at the Dartington Crystal factory at Torrington, N.Devon, producing images for a feature on the place. It was extremely interesting and I shot a great number of interiors, exteriors, people and details - though the couple of hours' solid work I did specifically in the difficult conditions of the glassblowing floor were rewarded by only one such shot being used! Still, it's a quality title and they did my images justice.

Netherstead Hall, a historic Midlands home shot for a quality interiors title

I came across this in a pleasing way, via a commercial shoot commissioned by a PR agency who needed material for a Sunday Times feature on their client's redevelopment of 19thC farm outbuildings. Next door was the client's home - and it was gorgeous! Built in 1652 on the site of a much older house, with a medieval moat, it had been beautifully restored. So I tried it immediately on Period Living magaxine...
