BBC Homes & Antiques magazine feature: photography at Dartington Glass

As distinct from complete features, sometimes a title will commission me directly for photography. In this case I spent a day at the Dartington Crystal factory at Torrington, N.Devon, producing images for a feature on the place. It was extremely interesting and I shot a great number of interiors, exteriors, people and details - though the couple of hours' solid work I did specifically in the difficult conditions of the glassblowing floor were rewarded by only one such shot being used! Still, it's a quality title and they did my images justice.

Netherstead Hall, a historic Midlands home shot for a quality interiors title

I came across this in a pleasing way, via a commercial shoot commissioned by a PR agency who needed material for a Sunday Times feature on their client's redevelopment of 19thC farm outbuildings. Next door was the client's home - and it was gorgeous! Built in 1652 on the site of a much older house, with a medieval moat, it had been beautifully restored. So I tried it immediately on Period Living magaxine...

...Who snapped it up promptly. This kitchen shot made the cover of the February 2007 issue, trailering my full-length feature inside. In spring 2008 I'm doing a full house shoot of another beautiful home not far away, again for Period Living.

I'm pleased to have established a good relationship with Build It magazine, one of the three leading self-build titles. This was my first feature for them in 2004 and it made the cover, which was an encouraging start. I continue to work regularly with this title.

Cyprus holiday home: selection of interiors and exteriors

Another speculative feature - a beautiful house at the prestigious Aphrodite Heights resort/golf course development near Paphos in W.Cyprus, acquired by a Bucks family who use it both for R&R and as a handy base from which to conduct business in the Mediterranean region. This lends added interest to feature possibilities, I think - it's with a couple of newspapers at present under consideration.

I come across an increasing number of interesting self-build houses and offer them to the three leading titles in this field - Build It, HomeBuilding & Renovating, and SelfBuild & Design. I've worked with all three, and find these features particularly satisfying - selfbuilders are an interesting lot, as are the architects who design houses for them (or sometimes for themselves).

Canada, Quebec: resort homes feature

I was offered the chance to cover this striking holiday-home development at fashionable Mont Tremblant just north of Montreal. There was early snow and sunshine too, great for photography. At the time of writing this feature has not been published, though it's under consideration by a few titles.

This Anglo-Canadian family has made such a success of its initial development that they're going ahead with a second, bigger development, at nearby Ogilvy Lakes - a chopper ride revealed the extent of it, and the grandeur of the surroundings.

I can vouch for the comfort of the large, luxurious log cabins! There are three patterns, all with sophisticated heating and all mod cons. Seen here are Alex & Gillian Porrit, two of my hosts.
